John Smith (Colin Farrell) arrives in the new world in 1607 as a mutinous crew member in chains. When Captain Christopher Newport (Christopher Plummer) realizes that John Smith is invaluable in the new world for his abilities he is pardoned. Before long the newcomers come in to contact with the local natives, one of whom, Pocahontas (Q'orianka Kilcher) takes a liking to John Smith. Soon John Smith becomes Captain John Smith and he is quickly strengthening his relations with both Pocahontas and her people. It isn't long before Pocahontas and John Smith's relationship is frowned upon by their respective peoples and they must part ways. When Pocahontas is outcast by her people for trying to help the white men she ends up staying with the white people and slowly becomes one of them. Her love for John Smith and later another young man cause her to explore something that to her is a new world, but not the one that is new to the white men.
