An American presidential election cannot be decided until one last vote is taken from a man, Bud (Kevin Costner), who lives in New Mexico. His vote went uncounted due to a malfunctioning voting machine and this has caused a tie between the two presidential candidates. He is currently unemployed, wants to get drunk and actually only voted because his daughter, Molly (Madeline Carroll), pushed him to do so. He unwittingly ends up in the spotlight because of this, with reporters camping out near his home. Bud will eventually have to make the decision, since the rest of the country is waiting to see who the next president will be.
