We first meet Ernesto Che Guevara (Benicio Del Toro) in Mexico, having dinner with no other than Fidel Castro (Demián Bichir). The future communist leader of Cuba convinces the young doctor to join his cause: to topple the unpopular regime of general Batista and take over power in Havana. After this, the story follows Che during the years of guerilla warfare in jungle, full of hardship, danger and death. He starts from the bottom, almost alone, but as time progresses and rebels are joined by more and more opressed peasants Che rises through the ranks.
